Why are individuals aged 13, 14, and 15 restricted from watching movies and web series rated for audiences 13 and above?
Hi I’m Zaid from Pakistan, and I’m delving into the question of why individuals aged 13, 14, and 15 face restrictions in watching movies and shows rated for 13 and above. Through my research and conversations with elders, I’ve come to understand that these restrictions are rooted in the cultural and societal differences among countries.
For instance, in Pakistan, where I reside, our culture is shaped by our own values and beliefs, primarily centered around Islam and morality. Each country has its unique cultural norms, and the content available reflects those norms. Take the example of the movie ‘Fast & Furious,’ which holds a 13+ rating. Although I’ve watched it with my family, there are explicit scenes that I choose to skip. The reason behind these viewing restrictions becomes clearer when we compare streaming services. While UK kids have access to certain content appropriate for their culture, the same content may not be suitable for Pakistani audiences due to differing cultural perspectives on relationships.
The limitations on movies and web series are commonly established by content rating systems, such as the Motion Picture Association (MPA) in the United States. These systems assign ratings like G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 to ensure that the content aligns with the maturity levels and sensitivities of specific age groups. These age ratings are designed to guide parents and viewers, promoting a responsible and age-appropriate viewing experience.
